Art of the guillotine

Phillip Allen has been involved in the television, radio, theatre and film/video world since the late 1960's.  His background in these areas has helped his development as a storytelling editor.  In the last 20 years Phil has focused on producing and editing.  He began with film in the early 1970s and then moved to linear editing in the early 1990s.  The introduction of non-linear systems in the mid-1990s was an easy transition.  He will travel to any location to edit your project.

Like most editor's, Phil has cut a large variety of projects. Everything that comes across the desk is an opportunity to learn and to improve.  Whether it is a corporate image piece or a fun spoof, the important thing is to keep editing.  The difficult jobs teach us just as well as the easy ones, maybe even more.

A NOTE ABOUT NON-LINEAR

Many of the early models were short-lived and faded from the scene.  One of the earliest was the AVID around 1989.  In the mid to late 90s Apple decided to purchase a product that had started out under a different name and finally released it as Final Cut Pro in 1999.  There are other editing tools on the market, but these two have the largest base.

Phil has used AVID on occasion but has been using Final Cut Pro, now part of Final Cut Studio, for over 11 years.  As the development of the two systems continue they seem to be ideal for different situations.  If you are just learning, Final Cut is a great place to start, but it would be best to learn both systems, maybe even get a working knowledge of others such as Adobe Premiere, Sony, or Grass Valley's EDIUS program.

A big portion of the work today is put to an FTP site for download by the producer or director and is occasionally emailed to clients for review.
